House & Home

Ceramic installation piece

House & Home is a ceramic performance piece of sorts. All together in a grid formation these houses become a suburb—a community defined by uniformity, built to value efficiency while leaving little room for individual expression.

But when one of the houses is placed in a new environment on its own, the house transforms entirely. The blank white walls no longer perpetuate the monotony and uniformity of a suburb, but instead begin to reflect and take on the colors of the space around them. It is the difference between the need for home creating a place and creating a home within a place.

These houses are now being given away to fifteen different people who have in some way embodied home for me, and placed on fifteen different shelves, tables, gardens—wherever the receiver sees fit for them. They will become a part of that person’s space—altering it and being altered by it.
